TNTimeline: Same-day approval at the border (Canada)

USMCA Professional Visa

The TN visa is available to citizens of Canada and Mexico under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA, formerly NAFTA). It provides fast, renewable work authorization for professionals in designated occupations. Canadian citizens can apply directly at the border with no prior petition required, making it one of the fastest paths to U.S. work authorization available.

How we approach the TN

We evaluate your career history and accomplishments with you to create a unique narrative that captures your achievements, and document them in a way that the government can understand.

Requirements & Criteria

03You have the qualifications required for your profession (typically a bachelor's degree)
04You have a prearranged full-time or part-time job with a U.S. employer
05The job qualifies as a professional-level position in the designated category
06A TN offer letter or support letter from the U.S. employer
07Proof of citizenship (passport for Canadians, passport plus visa for Mexicans)

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions

What professions qualify for TN status?
The USMCA list includes over 60 professions such as engineers, accountants, scientists, computer systems analysts, management consultants, graphic designers, and many more. Each profession has specific educational or credential requirements.
Can I get a green card while on TN status?
Technically yes, but the TN is a non-dual-intent visa. Filing for a green card can complicate TN renewals because you must demonstrate nonimmigrant intent at each entry. Many TN holders transition to H-1B first, then pursue a green card.
How do Canadians apply for TN at the border?
Canadian citizens present their passport, a TN support letter from the U.S. employer, and proof of qualifications to a CBP officer at a port of entry or preclearance location. There is no advance petition required, and approval is typically same-day.
Is there a limit on how many times I can renew?
There is no statutory limit on TN renewals. You can renew in 3-year increments indefinitely, as long as you continue to meet the requirements and can demonstrate that your stay is temporary.
Can my spouse and children come with me?
Yes. Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can accompany you in TD status. TD dependents can study but are not authorized to work in the United States.
